Rigging can be an interesting art form. For the most part, the audience will never see your work.
The only ones using your products will be the animation team and the lighting team. That being said this does not mean they can't look great.

Ah yes gimbal lock. Every animator and rigger has dealt with this. It is something that always causes issues.

Gimbal is not just an issue in the virtual world. Here is a great video by Vintage Space where a real life gimbal is reviewed. They solved this issue by adding a forth axis, maybe we should do something similar in 3D.
